Fire Extinguishers for your home? Good plan.

With the recent fires in Slave Lake, Alberta it brings to mind what do we do around our homes for fire prevention and fire safety? This is not to the scale as Slave Lake but it does need some time spent thinking and planning.

Fire prevention is the priority. Stop it before starts. Cooking safely, practicing smart electrical uses, and being careful with gas appliances is the best approach to make sure you are safe. Having good, Operable smoke detectors in the correct locations is very important too.

Now, my home has 3 small dry chemical fire-extinguishers located: one near the kitchen, one in the basement, and one in the garage. I am rotating them through a safety company to have them checked and re-conditioned. It is done every 4 years. I look at it that if a fire starts I can try to put it out, or at least slow it from spreading and gain some time.

Do you know how to use the fire extinguishers? Best to learn. During my time in the military we learned to use different extinguishers and practiced every 1 or 2 years. Make sure you know how to use the types you have in your home. Do your research, make a plan, and keep checking on your extinguishers and smoke detectors.

Don’t forget, if the fire is too big or is endangering your life or others – Get Out and Stay Out. Property can be replaced, People Can’t.
